Jmol Molecular Models: Ionized Sodium Hydroxide

When water molecules outnumber sodium hydroxide molecules, a tug of war ensues. The sodium ion is surrounded by water molecules, and protons are passed from water to hydroxide until it is impossible to know which oxygen atom originally belonged to the sodium hydroxide molecule. We say that the sodium hydroxide has ionized into a sodium ion and a hydroxide ion.
