Jmol Molecular Model: Ethane
This is an interactive model of the ethane molecule (C2H6). If you left-click your mouse on it, you can view it from different angles. Right-clicking on it will open up a menu of other options.
This model is color coded according to atomic charge. Shades of green and tan (gray in the black-and-white paperback version) are electrically neutral. In ethane, the two carbon atoms share their bonding electrons with the six hydrogen atoms. As a result, the charge distribution is uniform, and the molecule is desribed as non-polar.
