Chemistry 185, “Scientific Soapmaking” is a course exploring the chemistry of soap and the handcrafted soap industry. It satisfies the non-lab science requirement at Hampden-Sydney College.
The textbook for the course, Scientific Soapmaking, is included in the $50 activity fee for this course. The fee is not refundable, and includes all of the materials used this semester.
January 22, 2010: Partnership Contracts are due. Students who have not paid the activity fee may not join a firm.
January 25, 2010: First production day for firms.
February 24, 2010: Deadline for reserving a space at the Heart of Virginia Festival. See http://heartofvirginia.org/.
March 1, 2010: Last day to pour production soap.
March 5, 2010: Last day to turn in Level I Test.
March 8-12, 2010: Spring Break.
March 19, 2010: Last day to turn in Level II Test.
March 26, 2010: Last day to turn in Homework.
March 29, 2010: Last day to place items into Finished Goods. First day of juried soap sale.
April 2, 2010: Last day for firm inventory. Contracts, accounts, and batch record notebooks due in the stockroom by 5:00 PM. Accounts as of this date will be used to compute firm costs.
April 9, 2010: Last day of juried soap sale. Firm accounts must be up to date except for final sales figures.
April 13, 2010: Final accounts for each firm will be posted. Reports generated from these accounts are to be used in the Quarterly Reports. Return on Equity reported to each student.
April 16, 2010: Last day to turn in Cumulative Exam.
April 23, 2010: Last day to turn in Analytical Report.
April 26, 2010: Last day of class. Finished Goods “sold” in the juried soap sale will be returned to firms and divided among their partners.
April 27, 2010: Last day to turn in Quarterly Reports.
April 30-May 4, 2010: Professor Dunn will be out of town at the HSMG conference.
